Toyota Motor North America has partnered with Cirba Solutions to expand its battery recycling network. The collaboration will focus on collecting, transporting, dismantling, and processing end-of-life lithium-ion batteries from hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and battery electric vehicles. Cirba Solutions’ facility in Ohio will use advanced technology to recover critical minerals from scrap batteries, achieving a 95% recovery rate. The extracted battery-grade metals will be reintroduced into the supply chain. This partnership will enable Toyota to have a nationwide battery collection and recycling system, reducing costs and environmental impact. Currently, Toyota collects about 25,000 automotive batteries each year, but this number is expected to increase with the rising sales of battery electric vehicles. By partnering with Cirba Solutions, Toyota aims to reduce transportation and logistics costs by 70% by focusing on the Midwest and East Coast regions and decreasing the average miles driven for collection and recycling.
